DIY Colloidal Oat Soak: A Soothing Home Remedy for Eczema

Eczema is a skin condition that brings discomfort and irritation, often leaving you searching for relief. One natural remedy worth trying is a colloidal oat soak. Packed with anti-inflammatory and moisturising properties, colloidal oats can calm itching, reduce redness, and hydrate the skin.

It's easy to make this soothing soak at home - and its suitable for babies too.

What You'll Need:

  • Oats (Regular rolled oats or plain oatmeal. Avoid flavored or instant oats with additives.)

  • A blender, coffee grinder, or food processor (for grinding the oats into a fine powder)

  • Warm water (to fill your bathtub)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Colloidal Oats: Grind about one cup of oats using a blender, coffee grinder, or food processor until they turn into a fine, powder-like consistency. You'll know it's ready when the oats dissolve easily in water instead of sinking to the bottom.

  2. Test the Powder: Before pouring it into your bath, test the ground oats. Place a spoonful into a cup of warm water and stir. If the water turns milky and feels silky, you’re good to go!

  3. Run a Warm Bath: Fill your bathtub with warm water. Avoid hot water, as it can aggravate eczema-prone skin.

  4. Add the Oats: Gradually sprinkle the oat powder into the water while stirring with your hand to ensure it disperses evenly.

  5. Soak and Relax: Immerse yourself or gentle wash your baby or child in the bath for 10–15 minutes.

  6. Pat Dry Gently: After the bath, pat skin dry with a soft towel rather than rubbing, as rubbing may irritate sensitive skin.
