Why Sustainability in Skincare Matters—And How Pure Peony Walks the Talk
The skincare world is shifting. Today sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a core expectation. More people are asking tough questions: What’s really in my products? How were they made? What impact do they have on the planet?
Consumers want to know that their skincare not only works but also aligns with their values. They’re asking, Where did these ingredients come from? How is this packaged? Is this harming the planet or helping it?
At Pure Peony, we’ve been asking those questions from the very beginning. And we’re proud to be part of the solution.
Why It Matters: The Bigger Picture
Sustainability in skincare goes far beyond recyclable packaging or using “natural” ingredients. It’s about accountability at every level—from farm to face.
- Environmental impact: Traditional beauty products often rely on synthetic chemicals, plastic packaging, and high-waste manufacturing. The result? Pollution, carbon emissions, and massive amounts of landfill.
- Global urgency: Climate change, plastic pollution, and unethical supply chains have made consumers more aware of the social and environmental cost behind what they buy.
- Consumer demand: Today’s skincare users are well-informed. Over 65% actively seek out environmentally responsible brands. Nearly 60% prefer products labelled clean or organic. But as demand grows, so does greenwashing—when companies make sustainability claims that don’t stand up to scrutiny.
So, What Is Sustainable Skincare?
According to the Lowell Centre Framework, sustainable skincare means:
- Healthy for consumers
- Environmentally sound
- Supports local communities
- Safe production processes
- Economically viable
At Pure Peony, we’re proud to tick every one of these boxes.
How Pure Peony Does Sustainability—Authentically
At Pure Peony, sustainability isn’t a trend—it’s our foundation. Here’s how we’re doing our part:
🌱 We grow organically
All of our peony root is grown on our own BioGro-certified organic farm in New Zealand. No synthetic pesticides, no chemicals—just pure, healthy plants grown with care for the land.
We go beyond harvesting responsibly: for every peony plant we harvest, we replant two. This ensures long-term soil health and regenerative farming.
🧴 We package with purpose
- We’ve replaced conventional plastic with recyclable sugarcane-based tubes.
- Our jars are reusable glass, not single-use containers.
- All of our solid bars (soap, shampoo, conditioner) are packaged in locally sourced cardboard—no plastic, no waste.
Every bar you use means one less bottle in landfill.
🤝 We source responsibly
When we need ingredients we don’t grow ourselves, we turn to businesses who share our values.
💚 We support our community
We’re committed to staying local wherever possible—from growing to packaging to supporting community fundraising efforts. Sustainability also means keeping people in the loop—and uplifted.
The Bottom Line
Sustainability in skincare isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. From farming to packaging, ingredient sourcing to ethical partnerships, Pure Peony is committed to doing things differently—because it’s the right thing to do.
Together, small choices make a big impact.
